Recent category winner of the International Architecture Awards 2020, The Panda Pavilions Chengdu, are inspired by the prairies of Chengdu province in China.
Designed by Ping Jiang at EID Architecture, the four new pavilions will be an extension to Chengdu National Gian Panda Research Base, the world’s leading research facility on panda preservation.

The new extension is to become the research lab that will house and study panda behaviour and activity. It will also serve as an education and recreational area for the community while attracting millions of curious panda enthusiasts annually to visit the campus.
The Panda Pavilions sit within the environment of the National park creating an immersive experience for its visitors.
The architecture of each pavilion takes the form of a circle, with a central outdoor area for the bears, surrounded by viewing platforms, staff offices, support facilities and interactive exhibition space.
The design of the panda pavilions is a convergence of landscape, architecture, and land art. While the project provides a pedestrian-friendly navigation experience for visitors, it prioritizes an animal-friendly environment to minimize the alienation of ecology.”

The panda pavilions merge architecture, landscape and function covering 12,300 sqm.
Each building is covered with a cedar wood facade and equipped fine mist water spray to maintain the comfort of the animals. Expected to open in 2021.
